Ever since the Salt Lake Tabernacle's completion in 1867, and even before, the identity of the building's architect has been debated. Conflicting accounts and vague definitions of "architect" contribute to the controversy over the building's design. Brigham Young spearheaded the project and provided the overall conception for the Tabernacle. William H. Folsom drafted most of the architectural plans. Henry Grow acted as structural engineer and used his expertise in bridge building to create the unique design of the domed roof. Truman O. Angell designed the interior of the Tabernacle, including the gallery. Each also acted in a supervisory role over at least part of the construction. These four men all made vital contributions to the building, and none should be given sole credit for its architecture.
