The Church in Upper Canada struggled throughout its early history. Distance from Kirtland made communication of doctrinal and procedural changes difficult. Saints leaving Canada for the United States and missionaries sent to England also drained Canada of many of their strongest members. As the British Mission grew rapidly, the Church's focus moved away from Canada. However, the greatest decline in Mormonism in Canada occurred as a result of religious persecution. Since the Saints were linked to the dissenting William Lyon Mackenzie, even though his views often did not support the Church, the ruling Tory faction and the dominant Protestant religions united in their opposition to Mormonism
