Brown compares the dedicatory prayers of the first 100 temples through statistical analysis of their form and content. Over the last 160 years, the prayers have become shorter and have evolved in the topics addressed. Dedications have shifted from blessing detailed physical minutiae like screws and locks to sanctifying individual rooms. Early prayers were free-form and more often made reference to foundational events in the Restoration than did later prayers. Since his first dedicatory prayer in 1983, President Hinckley has established a pattern which begins nearly all of his prayers and which codifies elements that were generally present in earlier dedications.
