Andersen traces the evolution of the Latter-day Saint hymnal. She includes historical descriptions of Emma Smith's 1835 hymnal, the 1840 Manchester hymnal, the 1841 Nauvoo hymnal, the 1844 Little and Gardner Hymnal, the 1857 Psalmody, the 1889 Psalmody, the 1927 Latter-Day Saints Hymns, and the 1948 and 1985 hymn books. In five appendices, she demonstrates specific changes in the selection and the texts of hymns.
