"The building and completion of the transcontinental railroad brought an influx of non-Mormons into the Utah Territory. No longer could members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints enjoy complete isolation from the temptations of the world. In an effort to continue to build the kingdom and ensure that the Saints did not become dependent on the world, nor seduced by its offerings, Brigham Young began sending some Mormons to the eastern United States for schooling, specifically in the fields of law, medicine, and engineering. These studies were regarded as missions and some of the students were called and set apart for this task. They were encouraged to do well and reminded that their behavior reflected upon the whole church. Several women attended medical school and were assisted by the members of the Relief Society and the Young Ladies' Retrenchment Association. These men and women obtained their education for the Church as a whole, not just to fulfill individual dreams and/or goals. This focus changed after the Manifesto of 1890 ended polygamy and Utah became a state. As the Church entered the mainstream of American society and accepted capitalism, it became "common for students to be spurred by private ambitions for intellectual and professional advancement."
