The Shoshone-Bannock Indians actively participated in the Ghost Dance religious movement. Some non-Mormons claimed that the Mormons started the practice of the Ghost Dances in order to rise up an Indian army and create a theocracy in the Intermountain West. Smoak refutes this claim, but does state that the Mormon Church benefited from "the religious excitement engendered by the movement" as it "led some Indian peoples to seek out the Mormons."
