When Franklin S. Harris became the president of Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1921, he brought to the university a new vision. He transformed the institution, which had previously focused on producing teachers for the Church's educational network, into a university focused on equipping "students with the skills necessary to be leaders in whatever discipline or field they chose to study." Harris initiated programs that resulted in the university gaining accreditation, recruiting high-quality faculty members, and constructing a new library. He also made plans to construct other building, buy up-dated scientific equipment, and increase the library's collection. Franklin S. Harris's acomplishments and vision was a major reason for the Church's decision to not close BYU in 1926, when the church shifted its focus away from the academy network it had created in favor of the developing seminary program and closed such institutions as Brigham Young College in Logan.
