Walker traces the forerunners of the Salt Lake Tabernacle as well as the construction of the building itself. It was a very large auditorium for its time and did not fit the "Victorian neo-Gothic architecture" that 19th century travelers were used to seeing. As a result, some of the contemporary accounts of the building were not flattering. However, it served the needs of its people and today it "is praised as a building beyond its times." This article is composed of excerpts from Ronald Walker's article "The Salt Lake Tabernacle in the 19th Century: A Glimpse of Early Mormonism," Journal of Mormon History 31:3 (Fall 2005): 198-240.
