The authors stress the need to remember that without Martin Harris' financial support the printing of the "Book of Mormon would have been delayed if not postponed for an indeterminate season." Originally, Martin Harris was supposed to pay for half of the printing with Joseph and Hyrum Smith contracting to pay the remainder of the cost. However, the Smiths were unable to raise the money, and Martin Harris had to sell a portion of his farm to pay the debt to the printer. In addition, due to these financial circumstances and "other interpersonal concerns" his wife, Lucy, left him, and many of his former friends pitied him for supporting Joseph Smith.
