In the early days of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (now the Community of Christ), purchasing property of historic interest to the Church was not an interest of its leaders. However, that began to change, and between the years 1908 and 1963 the RLDS Church purchased the majority of land which now makes up the Joseph Smith Historic Site. Shireman provides details of when certain blocks were purchased and how much was paid for the property. In 1960, Nauvoo Restoration Inc. began acquiring lands for the LDS Church and the two churches swapped some properties in 1991 which "streamlined the boundaries" of the two historic sites.
