Brigham Young University has a long-standing connection with Jerusalem that eventually led to the establishment of the Semester Abroad program in Jerusalem. However, several precursors laid the foundation for both the Semester Abroad program and the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. These precursors included 1) a BYU Travel Study program, 2) individual professors who studied Hebrew and made multiple travels to Israel, and 3) the Yovail dancers, an Israeli dance group from the Pasadena California Stake. All of these individuals, groups, and programs made important contributions as they laid the foundation for BYU's Semester Abroad in Jerusalem.
