April 22, 1857 to May 9, 1858. Gardner leaves Salt Lake City with his brother and outgoing missionaries for Florence, Nebraska. He travels by handcart, noting distance traveled, landmarks passed, and Mormon handcart companies encountered. He reaches Florence where he visits his brother-in-law before sailing to St. Louis and traveling on to Detroit. On his own, Gardner crosses into Canada. He goes on a circuit tour, preaching the Gospel in southwestern Ontario. He visits his sister-in-law and works as a field hand, as the people are good but uninterested in Mormonism. Gardner returns to Council Bluffs, Iowa and spends the winter working in Genoa, Nebraska. The journal ends as he is preparing to make the return trip home.
