25 May 1863 to 17 September 1863. Mary and her family travel from Stillwater, Minnesota to St. Louis, Missouri on the steamer Canada. She reflects on Nauvoo while sailing past the city. There are Union soldiers on the steamer to protect it from Confederate raids. Several Mormons from England also board the steamer. Mary and her family join a wagon train under John R. Murdock and travel to Utah. Sandstorms and sickness hamper their movement but they successfully arrive in Salt Lake City.
