As a single, middle-aged woman, travelling without family, Martha Spence's diary provides a unique perspective among crossing the plains narratives. With the help of Joseph Heywood, she travelled with the 1850 Wolley company. Her diary records illnesses, trouble with animals, visits with Indians and other wagon trains, and occasional feelings of loneliness and discouragement.
