Lavina Fielding Anderson recorded and published attempts by LDS Church officials to suppress the enablement of women, historical research and open discussion of Mormon issues. This led to her excommunication from the church in September 1993. She was asked what incidents changed her into a dissenter. She mentioned the following: (1) she discovered a faith-promoting story told by her seminary teacher was not true; (2) she became aware of gender discrimination in the church while serving a mission; and (3) she opposed the First Presidency oppression against unauthorized symposia. She has faced her excommunication with increased devotion, and is convinced that she will be reinstated within her lifetime. She wants her presence in the church to be a compelling statement.
