Navajos are the largest Indian tribe in the United States, numbering over 200,000. They have been pressured by various Christian churches to convert to Christianity for almost 125 years. Since the middle of the twentieth century, significant numbers have departed from their traditional religion and joined various Christian faiths. The Mormon Church is "one of the most successful, and certainly the most controversial, of the Christian denominations to proselytize among the Navajos." It is estimated that approximately 40,000 tribal members have joined the Mormon Church. The author discusses the interest in the Mormons in proselytizing the Navajos and the Indian Student Placement Program. Little efforts were made to convert the Navajos to Mormonism until 1942.
