The Deseret alphabet, a written language system developed in the mid-19th century by George D. Watt and promoted by Brigham Young was designed exclusively for faithful Mormons, especially non-English-speaking immigrants. The effort failed because while it promoted Mormon unity, it also cut off access to knowledge from outside Utah.
