Denmark native Anthon Henrik Lund (1844-1921) was the first Scandinavian-born apostle. Lund converted to the Church in 1856, actively worked as a missionary in his home city of Aalborg, and emigrated to the United States in 1863, settling in Sanpete County, Utah. In the United States, Lund was a successful businessman, politician, missionary, LDS official, member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, and counselor to two church presidents. Though his primary allegiance was always to the Church, Lund embraced his Scandinavian identity by serving as an adviser and mentor to Mormon Scandinavian immigrants, as well as celebrating Scandinavian culture through his organization of festivals and other events.
