Prints reflections by the four editors of BYU Studies on its 40th anniversary. Clinton F. Larsen, editor from 1959 to 1967, relates his original idea to create a university magazine "drawing its breath from the influences of ages past, from literature and the books wherein it lives" and describes how the originally proposed title, Wasatch Review, became BYU Studies. Charles D. Tate Jr., editor from 1967 to 1983, discusses the editorial philosophy that balanced church concerns with concerns of censorship and notes published highlights of church history and research on Latter-day Saint scripture translations. Edward A. Geary, editor from 1983 to 1991, expounds on the chameleon-like qualities necessary for editing a scholarly journal and the editorial balancing act between church priorities and academic freedom. Editor since 1991, John W. Welch relates how the journal has retained the optimistic mood of its origins in the late 1950's.
