Early Shakerism and Mormonism taught that there was a Mother God. In the case of Shakerism, these teachings encouraged the development of "substantial gender parity in religious life and community governance." The Heavenly Mother teachings in Mormonism seem to have had little effect on the traditional roles that developed for men and women.
