Parley P. Pratt served two missions in San Francisco between 1851 and 1855. Having little money, he was able to keep Mormonism before the public's eye by using San Francisco's "mainstream newspapers to print articles favorable to Mormonism, including several of his own essays." The San Francisco newspapers printed these articles because the "sensational qualities of Mormonism sold papers." Many of the articles and essays dealt with polygamy. Pratt also engaged in debates.
