In 1899, a small group of American missionaries gathered with some friends in a small ravine near an Armenian cemetery at Aintab in what is today southern central Turkey. Their peaceful gathering was disrupted by onlookers who pelted them with rocks. They were defended by a group of Muslim soldiers. The author looks for what reasons might have started this stone-throwing incident. Joseph W. Booth's account of this cemetery incident follows in an appendix to this article.
