Bennett's publications came out. ("And those whom we had baptised apostased, like the wheat that fell on stony ground. . . .") Continued preaching, in Illinois; then east to New York and Connecticut. Detailed description of trip to Pennsylvania, August 1844. Poetry about native state. Debate on whether power of miracles should be continued to the present day; author took affirmative against James Starkey. ("Even those who said that he would be to great for me had to acknowledge his inability to stand against the truth.") Return to Nauvoo; arrived November 1844. Taught school; mercantile business; worked on temple. Marriage to Maria L. Dewey, January 1846. Departure from Nauvoo, spring 1846. ('The place talked of was California.") Survival problems, winter 1846-47. Trek to Utah; arrived September 1847. Harvest of 1848 better than expected. Mentions crickets; nothing about seagulls. Journey to assist incoming Saints.
