"Born at Heuling, Skanderborg Amt, Denmark, 1824. Father died when author was two years old. Military service, 1846-52. Frustrated in his desire to become schoolteacher because of war over Schleswig-Holstein. Bricklayer. Married Ane Kirstine Nielsen, 1854. Worked with C.C.A. Christensen, who believed in Mormonism. Author, wife, and Christensen baptized into LDS Church, 1854. Missionary work. Pastor over Copenhagen, Fyn, Lolland, and Bornholm Conferences, 1857. First counselor in Scandinavian Mission presidency, beginning in 1858. From this point, article is primarily biographical in third person, relying on Wilhelmsen's journals for much of the information. Journal excerpts cover brief periods in 1860 (in Denmark), 1865 (traveling from Bear Lake Valley to Salt Lake City prior to departure on mission to Scandinavia), 1879-80 (in Denmark, where Wilhelmsen was president of Scandinavian Mission). Page numbers listed above are only for autobiographical portions of article. Wilhelmsen's own account was retrospective to 1858, with contemporaneous entries thereafter."
