October 17, 1848 to December 17, 1849. Lyman describes daily life in the Salt Lake Valley. She spends much of her time with her sister and sister-wife, Caroline. The two of them pool resources to care for their children and trade sewing for provisions. Lyman's husband, Amasa Lyman, is absent for almost all of the time, causing her to reflect on her loneliness and the trials of polygamy.
