"Born in Knox County, Illinois, 1842. Parents joined LDS Church, c. 1844. Crossed plains, 1850. At Lehi. Moved to Cedar City, 1853. Reformation, winter of 1856-57. Catechized and rebaptized. Married William Jordan Flake, 1858. (He had lived in San Bernardino after coming to Utah from Mississippi.) Lived at Beaver. Received endowments and sealed to husband, 1861. Husband took plural wife, 1868. ("Duty was calling me. It seemed Duty was always calling.") Husband called to colonize Arizona, 1877. Settled on Little Colorado. Unhappy with conditions in settlement. Bought ranch. Withdrew from United Order, 1878. Joined by other families. Went to Utah to get more cattle. Erastus Snow named settlement Snowflake. Troubles over polygamy, 1880s. Husband sent to prison. $3,500 in fines and costs. Murder of son, 1892. Attended Salt Lake Temple dedication, 1893. First temple work in Salt Lake Temple. Condensation or excerpts from author's journal. Original apparently did not contain dated entries but was in form of long autobiographical sketch. Editor copied journals of her mother in order to preserve them, c. 1923. Introspective chapter on reaction to husband's taking plural wife very good. An impressive autobiography."
