"School of Prophets, 1869. Witnessed driving of last spike of Utah Central Pacific Railroad, 1870. Usually attended theater during trips to Salt Lake. Worked in printing establishments for a few weeks or months. Attended meetings in new tabernacle. ("The singing and the sound of the grand organ was truly grand.") Subscribed to several newspapers and magazines. Avid reader. Corresponded with wives, other members of family, relatives in England. Move to Holden, about 1872. Paid off debt to Perpetual Emigration Fund, 1873. Death of son Christopher; great anguish. Inserted, typed note: "The so-called suicide as reported on this page, later developed to have been a murder." Holden congregation voted to enter Order of Enoch, 1874. Studied bookkeeping. Led singing for Holden Sunday School; occasionally threatened to resign. Gave violin and singing lessons. Trip to Salt Lake, 1876. Called on wife in Farmington. ("She did not know me but received me kindly on learning who I was.") Voted for George Q. Cannon as territorial delegate. Unsuccessful courtship of Eliza Poulson as plural wife, 187778. Unsuccessful courtship of Fanny Johnson, 1879. Death of Ellen Beecroft, wife of son John, 1879. Gifts from neighbors. Death of first wife, 1882. Beautiful tributes.
