25 July 1849 to 23 October 1849. Young's diary entries are quite short and mostly record distances traveled and the location of campsites. Resting in camp, Young hears that many Mormons had lost their wagons on the trail to California and were heading back. The wagon train waits two months for the weather to get cool enough to take the Santa Fe Trail. The Snake Indians are willing to trade a pony for an old flintlock. The company hunts and fishes near the Beaver Creek.
