8 October 1849-15 January 1850. Rich, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, starts on a mission to California to help Elder Amasa Lyman preside over the church in that region. He helps placate the Indians in Utah Valley and catches Captain Jefferson Hunt's wagon train. He leaves the train and joins a train under Captain Smith. Piute Indians unsuccessfully attempt to steal their horses and Rich finds an abandoned Indian lodge. Rain saves the company from dehydration, and Rich leaves the Smith company and rejoins Captain Hunt. They reach Los Angeles.
