April 1, 1886 to August 15, 1891. Layne journeys from Lewiston, Utah to Lee's Creek, Alberta, Canada. He travels with a few other men, noting places stopped and landmarks passed. Layne builds much of the settlement, as a lumberjack and carpenter. One of the first settlers, he often interacts with Orson Card. Used to hostility, he is surprised by the friendliness of non-Mormon and Indians in Canada. Layne meets his family in Dillon, Montana, bringing them to Lee's Creek. He records community events such as Christmas, picnics, and celebrations of Canadian holidays. Layne also notes visits from the First Presidency, apostles, and other well-known Utah citizens. Thoroughly pleased with his new life, Layne's diary ends with his application for Canadian citizenship.
