July 16, 1846 to August 22, 1847. Jones provides sporadic entries from the beginning of the journal until December 2, 1846; daily or near-daily entries after Dec. 2. Jones devotes much of his diary's space to describing the land as he marches with the Mormon Battalion from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Los Angeles, California and back. He includes detailed descriptions of the San Diego and the San Luis Missions as they looked in 1847. He also details the movement of General. Stephen Kearney between January 1 and August 22, 1847, and occasionally the movements of Col. John C. Fremont during the same period as well. Jones describes finding the Donner Party camp in an uncharacteristically detailed entry on June 21, 1847.
