"This book tells the story of an important aspect of the restoration. It is a glimpse into the momentous week when the mantle of the Prophet Joseph Smith fell upon Brigham Young. It is an account that is based upon the records of Brigham Young and Wilford Woodruff who were Apostles at the time and later became Presidents of the Church, Willard Richards who was an Apostle at the time and has been with the Prophet and Hyrum in Carthage Jail, Thomas Bullock, George Laub, William Clayton and others who served at various times as scribes and recorders to the Prophet. This work is also based on the testimony of numerous diarists, humble Saints who were present and witnessed the event, and then wrote about it in diaries, letters, or personal histories. Although many references to the event could be cited, the writer felt in 1974, and still feels, that an exhaustive catalogue of statements might make the account tedious, and that the sampling presented here is sufficient to constitute a witness."
