May 30, 1843 to December 27, 1844. Huntington accompanies his brother-in-law, Henry Jacobs, on a mission to western New York. The going is slow due to flooding. They stop to hold public meetings in the towns they pass. The two reach Buffalo, New York, where they stumble upon a body and participate in the coroner's inquest. Huntington and Jacobs tour Niagara Falls before organizing public meetings. Their missionary efforts are successful, as they baptize enough members to form a new congregation. Huntington separates from Jacobs and goes to Waterloo, Canada where he preaches. He rejoins Jacobs and other missionaries for the return to Nauvoo. The two stop in Kirtland, Ohio where Huntington reflects on how the city has changed. Joseph Young raises money for the two men to continue home. The money soon runs out, and they go on foot. Eventually, Jacobs and Huntington reach Nauvoo, Illinois. In Nauvoo, Huntington attends school, joins the Masons, and is ordained a Seventy. He recounts the removal of his mother's body to a new grave, noting her remains are perfectly preserved, despite five years burial. Huntington celebrates Christmas and acts in a hit play.
