November 29, 1849 to April 30, 1850. Gallup arrives in Iowa, having decided to explore the frontier and investigate the Mormons. He notes anti-Mormon sentiment in nearby towns. He visits Kanesville, Iowa and decides to go west and learn more. He attends balls and church meetings in the evenings, trading in neighboring towns during the day. Eventually, he requests, and is given, baptism. Gallup offers a summary of his winter activities, reflecting on religion and crossing the Plains. He notes his preparation and expectations for the journey. He also sends a glowing report of Iowa to a cousin interested in emigrating. In the last entries, Gallup sustains Brigham Young as prophet and marries, just prior to leaving Kanesville.
