8 May 1862 to 9 July 1863. William and his family leave England aboard the William Tapscott. Seven hundred other Mormons are also on board. Several passengers are injured during the passage. William and his family start for Utah in a company of Saints. Their train is fired at by Confederate artillery in Missouri and has to stop because of skirmishes between Union and Rebel forces. William remarks on storms as he travels across the plains and visits the Temple site in Salt Lake City.
