May 1862 to September 1870. Freshwater describes the conditions on the voyage from England to America on the William Tapscott in May and June 1862. He rides the train from Williamsburg, New York to St. Joseph, Missouri. Freshwater's train is attacked by Confederate soldiers. After arriving to the valley in 1863 in the William B. Preston Company. Freshwater describes the Salt Lake Temple in its early stages. In 1867, Freshwater details the grasshopper infestation in Provo with special attention given to the grasshoppers attack on tobacco plants and corn. Freshwater accounts a raid by U.S. troops, citing a telegram that describes their abuse of citizens and their destruction of homes and property.
