11 October 1849 to 9 December 1849. The diary begins as Farrer travels through Provo, Utah on his way to California. He gives detailed descriptions of the route taken as well as the topographical layout of the land. A council of the Elders in the company decides to strike out on a new route to California. They find there is no water close and turn back to the original route. Farrer describes decisions made by the company, as well as the routes of and interactions with other travelers in the region. Farrer notes any source of water, and describes a difficult traversal of a canyon in pouring rain. Farrer fears the Piute Indians and, incorrectly, thinks they have killed several men from a following company. They follow the Spanish Trail and reach the Mohave River. The journal ends abruptly as Farrer approaches the Cahoon Pass.
