When Joseph Smith issued a call for the Saints to gather in Kirtland, Ohio, many of them crossed Lake Erie, embarking from Buffalo and landing at Fairport, Ohio. Once Kirtland became the headquarters of the Church, missionaries were transported over Lake Erie, passing through Fairport. The first half of this article presents the above history, and the second half provides accounts, in chronological order, of members of the Church who traveled this route. A plaque was placed below the Fairport Lighthouse in August 2003 to commemorate this maritime migration.
