In early 1914, the First Presidency approached Willem DeBry, a Dutch convert, about publishing a newspaper for immigrants from the Netherlands. Though reluctant, he agreed because he hoped his efforts would help his fellow countrymen adjust to life in a new place. Publication of "De Utah Nederlander" began on April 2, 1914 and ran through October 3, 1935. Mulder describes the sacrifices and contributions of DeBry, who devoted twenty-one years of his life to bringing not only the news but also information about social, cultural, and religious events to Dutch speaking immigrants in Utah.
