Scandinavian Saints immigrating to Utah had to travel across the North Sea and into England to reach Liverpool before they began the journey across the Atlantic. Each stage of their journey was contracted by the Scandinavian Mission with shipping and railway operators, such as Morris and Company and the Guion Line. They gathered in Germany before they sailed to an eastern English port, most frequently Hull, where they connected with a train that took them to Liverpool. The John Forsgren Company of 1852 was the first large group of Mormons to make such a trip.
