During the 1890s, the LDS Church was in dire financial straits. Hoping to find a solution to its financial woes, Church leaders invested in gold mining properties in Nevada. These investments proved to be a drain on Church resources and were sold in 1898. Bullion Beck mining stock was transferred to pay off debts and obligations incurred with the Sterling mine.
