In 1982, Mary Bradford stepped down from her post as editor of Dialogue. Having been edited and published in the east, the operation moved to Salt Lake City where Jack and Linda Newell took over the editorship. Their tenure came at a time when controversy concerning Mormon intellectuals and the publication of Mormon research findings was called into question by Church officials. This period also experienced the Hofmann forgeries and bombings and the speaking ban on Linda Newell and Valeen Avery. The journal was professionalized and set on a solid financial footing.
