November 15, 1852 to September 30, 1854. Carter provides what largely constitutes a travel account of his mission to India. In searching for a member baptized in Chunar, Carter and his companion, Brother Foterhingham, encounter members of the British guard who try to discourage them from proselytizing further, rationalizing that the people of India were not free to choose their religion and the British guard were not religious men. Carter and his companion meet with little success, their journeys taking them from Chunar to Dinapore to Calcutta. They return in 1854, personally satisfied at their efforts, despite their lack of outward success.
