1854. Carroll leaves New Brunswick, Canada on board the steamship John Warren. He travels to St. Johns where he boards the steamship Admiral. From Boston, he travels by railroad through Albany, New York to Buffalo where he take the steamboat Ocean across Lake Erie. He stays in Detroit. He take the railroad to Chicago. Get on board the steamer Ben Campbell at Lowell, Illinois. He travels down the Illinois River. He arrives in St. Louis on May 24, 1854. He takes the steamboat Edinburg to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He reports sickness, blessings, and deaths at Salt Creek camp.
