November 1, 1917 to July 2, 1922. Cantwell records faithfully the everyday activities of Smithfield, Utah. He chronicles the weather, agricultural activities, mentioning specifically the beet crops and the newly built pea factory. Cantwell also discusses conditions in neighboring locations such as Montpelier, Idaho and Star Valley, Wyoming. Cantwell also writes a great deal about World War I, though he passes over some events (such as the U.S. entrance into the war) with little to no mention. He also makes continual references to the Spanish Flu epidemic, noting the deaths of several friends and neighbors throughout the record.
