November 23, 1849 to March 27, 1850. Campbell primarily chronicles daily travel conditions, such as temperature, wind direction, landmarks, travel distances, water resources, animal health, daily camp activities, and instruction given by Pratt, Phelps, and Fullmer. The company meets Wakara, the Ute Indian Chief. The expedition includes the present day sites of Provo, Springville, Manti, Salina, Richfield, Marysvale, Circleville, Paragonah, Parowan, Cedar City, Washington, St. George, Santa Clara, Gunlock, Enoch, Fillmore, and Nephi. In the back of his journal, Campbell includes a dictionary of 260 Ute words and their English meanings. He also includes petroglyph drawings from Parowan Gap.
