Reel 2, Item 2a
October 8, 1849 to September 24, 1850. Bigler is called to mine for John Smith. He is unhappy, but gathers provisions and joins a Gentile company. His company sets out for California, following Charles Richs notes. Bigler records the weather, distance traveled, and availability of water and feed. His companions split from Richs path and take a new trail. It is a disaster, as the trail proves impassable. The company agrees to take the Old Spanish Trail, but wanders in the mountains looking for a new pass instead. Out of water, Bigler is saved by a sudden rain, which he considers sent by God. He returns to the Old Spanish Trail, leaving his company to join with Parley Pratts company. Provisions run low, and men and horses suffer. During the difficult journey, all of Biglers horses die. He reaches Wimmers Ranch (San Bernardino), where he celebrates Christmas and rebuilds his health. Bigler continues to Los Angeles, then up to Sutters Fort where he mines before being called on a mission to Hawaii. He travels to Mormon Island where he finds his companions.
