April 12, 1856 to September 21, 1856. Bermingham writes of arriving in Liverpool, England to immigrate to the U.S. He describes the boarding procedures and the organization of Saints on board the Samuel Curling, as well as rules and regulations laid down by church leaders for the voyage. He records his family's seasickness, selling copies of the Millennial Star to the Saints onboard, and guarding the cabins of the single women. The diary continues with his journey to Utah. Bermingham writes of the difficulty of crossing the plains by handcart in the Daniel D. McArthur Company. He himself turns back once because he believes the journey is too hard by handcart, but ultimately chooses to rejoin the group the next day. Most of the entries during this time consist of the time the camp started and stopped, plus the distance traveled that day. In several entries, Bermingham makes special note of members of the handcart company who dropped out over the course of the journey, either permanently or just for a time to earn money. The journal ends with his arrival in Salt Lake and Bermingham accusing the relief wagons of extortion.
