"This dissertation describes and analyzes the actions of the Mormon Church to expand in Chile, as well as the local conditions that precipitated the conversion of Chileans to this American-made religion. The study concludes that church leaders mixed religious and political motivations in their proselyting activities, but no evidence indicates that they conpired with the CIA to overthrow President Allende nor that they worked with the administration of General Pinochet, but that they did hold an anti-communist position. Furthermore, this study discusses the legacy of the Church in Chile and questions the statistics of conversion given by the Church. To complete this task, the author performed research in the Church archives in Salt Lake City, Utah, and consulted other archives and sources in Chile, Argentina, and the United States."
