The Mormon Vanguard Brigade of 1847 : Norton Jacob's Record

"While William Clayton's and Thomas Bullock's accounts may be the most universally instructive portrayals of the 1847 journey, Norton Jacob's record of the trek begs the attention of all students of the Mormon exodus to Utah, if not a significant place in the historic chronicles of the entire overland venture. First printed as a typescript in 1949 (reprinted in 1953) by family members, that limited edition of 'The Record of Norton Jacob' lacked the interpretive annotation required to properly place the journey in context and to illustrate its importance in Mormon literature as personal narrative. Jacob's straightforward, legible, and well-written chronicle makes accessible the view of one of the expedition's rank-and-file, in contrast to the more visible records written by and for the company's leaders (Clayton and Bullock)."
